Chennai beach

Chennai, the cosmopolitan capital of Tamil Nadu, captivates tourists with its mouth-watering food, fascinating history, and breathtaking beaches. Chennai offers something to suit the interests of all visitors, be they history buffs, beachcombers, or cultural enthusiasts. Here’s your comprehensive guide to the top things to do in Chennai that will enchant you:

ZoloStays is India’s leading co-living network that provides fully managed, move-in-ready rooms alongside a vibrant, community-driven living experience for students and professionals.

Marina Beach

You haven’t really seen the city until you’ve stood on the sands of the Marina at dusk. It’s the second-longest urban beach in the world, but it’s more about the vibe than the distance. You’ll see families, kite-flyers, and corn-on-the-cob sellers everywhere. It’s the ultimate thing to do in Chennai if you want to see the city’s heart beating in one place.

Tip: Walk toward the Lighthouse end rather than the main statue area. It’s a bit less crowded, and you can actually go up the lighthouse for a killer view of the coastline.

PGs in Chennai

Kapaleeshwarar Temple

This is easily one of the most beautiful places to visit in Chennai. Located in the old neighbourhood of Mylapore, this Shiva temple is famous for its massive, rainbow-colored tower (gopuram). I love going on Friday evenings—the energy is electric, the chanting is hypnotic, and the surrounding narrow lanes are filled with traditional shops.

Tip: Grab a degree coffee at the small stalls outside the temple gates after your visit. It’s the best way to end a Mylapore morning.

DakshinaChitra

If you want a break from the traffic, drive down the East Coast Road to this living museum. They’ve basically saved old, decaying heritage houses from all over South India and rebuilt them here. You can walk through a 19th-century Kerala house or watch weavers in a Tamil Nadu courtyard. It’s a peaceful, soulful thing to do in Chennai.

Tip: Check the schedule for folk dance performances at the entrance; they usually happen in the afternoons and are way better than any stage show.

Pondy Bazaar

Ignore the old blogs—Pondy Bazaar is the crown jewel of T. Nagar, not Parry’s Corner. This is where everyone goes to shop. Since they added the pedestrian plaza, it’s actually walkable now. You can find everything from high-end silk sarees at Nalli to 200-rupee sandals on the pavement. If you’re looking for vibrant places to visit in Chennai, this is it.

Tip: Don’t be afraid to haggle with the street vendors, but keep it friendly. If you’re buying clothes, always check for “export surplus” deals.

Fort St. George Museum

This was the first British fortress in India, and it’s still standing strong. Walking through the gates feels like a time warp. The museum inside has some wild artefacts from the colonial era, and St. Mary’s Church is the oldest Anglican church in the East. It’s a quiet, heavy-hitting thing to do in Chennai for anyone who loves a good story.

Tip: You need a valid ID to enter the complex since it also houses the state government offices, so don’t leave your passport or Aadhar card at the hotel.

The Madras Crocodile Bank

Forget the inland parks if you want to see reptiles. The Madras Crocodile Bank on ECR is a world-class conservation center. Seeing a 15-foot saltwater croc sunning itself just a few feet away is a core memory kind of experience. It’s one of the most unique places to visit in Chennai, especially if you’re tired of museums.

Tip: If they are running the “Night Safari,” book it. Seeing the crocodiles’ eyes glowing in the dark under a flashlight is genuinely thrilling.

Government Museum Chennai

The Museum in Egmore is a massive red-brick complex that looks straight out of a Victorian novel. The Bronze Gallery is the real star here—some of these statues are over a thousand years old, and the detail is insane. It’s an essential thing to do in Chennai if you want to understand the incredible artistry of the Chola dynasty.

Tip: The museum is huge and can get hot, so head straight for the Bronze Gallery first while your energy is high, then check out the Museum Theatre.
