What Is Coliving? Everything You Need to Know

Coliving is quite popular across India, especially in the metropolitan tier-I cities and even in the fast-catching-up tier-II cities as well. In a nutshell, it’s accommodation shared with like-minded people of your age, where the ambience feels quite happening, the rooms are all clean, the essentials of life covered, and there are many new friends to make. A home-like comfortable stay away from home, that’s close to your heart. That’s co-living for you!

The abundant amenities you get to enjoy in common areas are what make it an attractive proposition. All these come with a dash of comfort that comes with the feeling that you’re not alone in a new city, as there are hundreds of people like you around. Flown from different small cities and towns to the big cities, to pursue higher education or to accept that job letter.

Why is co-living so popular?

The reasons why co-living is a hit amongst the young population are many. Because coliving gives them a chance to live life to the fullest. Carefreely stay during that phase of their lives where they are new to the city and exploring it to get a grip on its lifestyle. Add to it the endless opportunity to meet new people, and get a sense of calmness when they interact with each other. No wonder, co-living is mushrooming in most of the happening localities in the top cities and tier-II cities. Simply put, coliving is an upgraded version of a typical PG but grows on you with the kind of amenities they have and the facilities they provide you with. All this with a sense of security of living with like-minded people in the best possible stay. Coliving communities will only get better and bigger from here. Co-living spaces are all you want for that great stay.

Benefits of Coliving

If you count the benefits of co-living on your fingers, you will fall short of fingers! Yep, there are many benefits you can easily find when you choose co-living over the usual PGs. The kind of people you get to live with come from different backgrounds, and this expands your knowledge. In this shared living space, the rooms you get to stay in would be desirable. The food will keep your taste buds pampered, alive, and kicking. The many amenities will surely make your stay as pleasant as possible. Best of all, living with roommates who share the same vibes, is a great community space to mingle and make new friends. When you get all these and a lot more to stay with, who would want to settle down for anything less than this? Isn’t it?

Different Types of Coliving Arrangements

Informal or Conventional Shared Housing

Conventional shared housing through kinship and other social networks is how it’s normally done. Like staying at your distant relative’s house, at a friend’s place, in that person’s house who’s from your hometown, etc. The problem with informal housing arrangements like this is that you’ll always be at their mercy.

Not to mention the numerous compromises you will have to make. The living space allotted to you could be too little of a space to throw in all your stuff, unwind the day and spend some me-time. You’ll have to forget comfort altogether and live a life that feels compromised on many levels.

Adult Dorms

Adult dorms might perk up your ears when someone spells it out, but only those who are staying in there know how painful it can be. The reasons for this could be many. These adult dorms are primarily designed to accommodate those who want to live as close as they can to their work.

And that means, they don’t care much about the kind of food that’s served there, cleanliness in common areas, overall hygiene of the place, poorly serviced and maintained rooms.

All these things that are glaringly missing won’t bother them at all. As proximity to work is what they all look for. And that’s the one and the only thing they want and get it in stays like this. These adult dorms come without any frills and mostly cater to the working crowd who’s slightly older, in the age bracket of say 35-50 years of age.

Last but not least, traffic is the main culprit here. The working crowd chooses adult dorms over everything else so they don’t want to commute to work bracing for the traffic every day.

Co-operative Housing

Co-operative housing societies are an integral part of urban dwellings and they have existed in India for quite some time now. Why they are the favorite of the masses because they provide affordable housing solutions.

Normally, housing cooperatives are self-regulated entities, governed completely by their members. With the consent of their members, they are formed through cooperation. For that sense of living together with the safety net of each other when in need.

The general norm is a cooperative shared living space is a legally-established body and this body will own and manage properties consisting of one or more residential structures. How it works is – that the housing society purchases land first, develops it later, constructs flats, and finally allows them to its members.

As these are governed and self-regulated by themselves, those who come seeking shelter here, especially the young lot, for shared accommodation will have to make quite a few changes to their lifestyle. There will be restrictions like you can’t go out in the dead of night. Can’t bring your girlfriend/boyfriend. No late-night parties and no loud music playing.

With all these restrictions the youngster’s desire to live life to the full gets curtailed and they would have no say in it, to make it worse.

Co-Housing

A cluster of homes that look like co-living apartments with common shared amenities, in general, is what cohousing is all about. You could say, it’s semi-communal housing consisting of a cluster of private homes and a shared community space (for cooking or laundry facilities). The idea of living together in a space like this sounds enticing but once you start living in there. With the cracks of stress on the common area, facilities will start to get bigger and bigger. Community space has a certain limitation when it comes to how many people it can cater to. Anything beyond that is surely not worth your living there. Co-housing may be affordable housing but you will miss out on how fun your stay can be.

Communes

It’s nothing but a group of people living together as a community and sharing possessions and responsibilities. These are normally for special purposes. And can’t be found at all the places. This type of shared living space may be suitable for those who work together and want to stay together after work. Communal living could be your thing to sort out your stay.
